Series: Previously Serialized (Now Combined Edition)
Taylor can’t stand her college roommate, but when Cecile offers to pay her to be the designated driver—all she has to do is sit in the car and wait—Taylor reluctantly agrees. Bad decision. After being drugged, Taylor wakes up in a cage in a world she doesn’t recognize, beside a man desperately urging her to stay quiet before the guards return. She insists she doesn’t belong there—but no one believes her. Not that it matters, since she can barely understand the language being spoken around her.
This is a portal fantasy romance with strong fated mate undertones and immediate survival stakes.
I originally read an earlier version of this book when it was broken into shorter installments (roughly 100 pages each). At the time, the story mainly covered Taylor meeting Gareth and establishing her backstory. It ended before the plot truly expanded, and I didn’t continue because I’m not a fan of serialized stories marketed as full books.
However, Amazon now indicates that the previously separated installments have been combined into one 600-page complete novel. That alone makes it much more appealing.
From what I read in the earlier version, I genuinely enjoyed the premise. The fated mate setup, the world-building hints, and the dynamic between Taylor and Gareth were compelling enough that I plan to revisit the full edition now that the story appears complete.
I’ll update this review once I’ve read the expanded version in its entirety.
Update:
This review is an update to my original review after reading the complete version of the story. The copy I initially received only contained the first section, but the author has since combined everything into one full-length novel—and I am so glad they did.
The story picks up immediately after the events of the original stopping point, with the group reeling from the ambush by the Obsidian Witch and the heroine being taken away. From there, the pace never lets up. Every twist, reveal, and new piece of information felt purposeful, keeping me fully invested from beginning to end.
One thing potential readers should know is that this is definitely a fantasy-first romance. The spice takes its time getting there and doesn't really arrive until roughly three-quarters of the way through this nearly 600-page story. That said, the slow burn is absolutely worth it. There aren't a huge number of spicy scenes, but the ones we do get felt earned after everything these characters go through.
What really kept me hooked were the mysteries surrounding the heroine and her past. I suspected early on that there was more to her than simply being human, but some of the larger reveals still managed to surprise me. I correctly guessed one major connection fairly early, but the full truth behind it was handled in a way that still made the reveal satisfying. There is nothing better than partially solving a mystery and then discovering the author still has a few tricks left up their sleeve.
The world-building, magic system, and character relationships all work together beautifully. Every revelation feels like another piece of a larger puzzle clicking into place, and I loved watching the story expand as the characters uncovered more truths about themselves and the world around them.
This is one of those romantasy books that completely pulls you into its world and refuses to let go. By the time I reached the final page, I wasn't ready to leave these characters behind. The story wraps up enough to feel satisfying while still leaving plenty of reasons to continue the series.
The 614 page option is available on Kindle Unlimited or buy it on Amazon for $6.49 by clicking here.
