Book Review: Quest for Love by Danielle Hill (Hearts at Play Book 1)

Genre: Young Adult Romance • Contemporary Romance

Tropes: Online Friends, Gamer Romance, Hidden Identity, College Romance, Friends to Lovers, Slow Burn, Closed Door Romance, Meet Cute, Online Gaming, Love Triangle (Perceived)

Spice Level: None

Format: eBook

Series: Hearts at Play Book 1

When Arden's best friend leaves for the summer, she decides to see what all the excitement surrounding online gaming is about. Logging into Quest for Camalor for the first time, she has no idea what she's doing until one friendly player takes her under his wing. Before long, he's introduced her to his group of friends, and what starts as simply learning the game slowly turns into something much more.

At least for Arden. As the weeks pass, she finds herself developing real feelings for the boy behind the screen. So when she discovers they attend the same college, asking to meet in person feels like the obvious next step. His answer isn't what she expected. Now Arden is left wondering if she completely misread everything between them—or if there's more going on than she realizes.

I picked this book up after downloading it for free quite a while ago and finally got around to reading it for my alphabet reading challenge. It ended up being a charming surprise.

This is a sweet young adult romance featuring college sophomores and a completely closed-door romance. As someone who spends plenty of time gaming on PC—and whose husband is also a gamer—the premise immediately appealed to me. There's just something fun about the idea of meeting someone online, building a genuine friendship through a game, and then discovering they're living in the very same town. It made the romance feel both modern and incredibly relatable.

The author also does a great job directing the reader toward one potential love interest while quietly planting clues about where the story is actually headed. I had my suspicions fairly early on, simply because it's a trope I read with some frequence, but even knowing where I thought things were going didn't take away from the enjoyment. Watching everything unfold was still satisfying, and I appreciated how naturally the mystery was woven into the romance.

Despite being only 157 pages, the story never felt rushed. The pacing works well for the length, allowing enough time to connect with the characters while still delivering a complete and satisfying romance. By the end, I found myself hoping we'd eventually get a story featuring Arden's best friend, Solana. She was a fun supporting character, and I'd happily come back to this world if she gets her own happily ever after.

This book is available on Kindle Unlimited or buy it on Amazon for $3.61 by clicking here.

Book Review: The Skinny by Monica Ross (The Fatkini Chronicles Book 2)

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Tropes: Why Choose , Author x Narrator, Found Family, Toxic Ex/Sibling Drama, Personal Growth

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Format: eBook

Series: The Fatkini Chronicles Book 2 (Must Be Read in Order)

Zelda, Aithan, and Drew are finally settling into something that feels real. They know what they want—and none of them are willing to give it up.

Unfortunately, life isn’t done testing them.

Zelda’s toxic sister and her equally frustrating ex keep forcing their way back into her life, threatening everything she’s building. But this time? Zelda isn’t backing down. She’s done being pushed around and is more than ready to put both of them in their place.

I started this immediately after finishing Book 1 because I needed answers—especially with everything going on with Aithan and that ending. This book delivers on all of it, with even more relationship development, higher emotional stakes, and definitely more spice. 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

The dynamic between Zelda, Aithan, and Drew continues to evolve in a way that feels natural, even as things get more complicated. There’s still the potential for the relationship to expand further, but with everything currently happening, I’m not convinced it’s the best move—at least not right now.

One of my favorite parts of this book is Zelda’s growth. She isn’t just changing her situation—she’s changing how she sees herself. Watching her step into confidence, embrace her body, and stop hiding behind clothes that don’t fit was incredibly satisfying. Drew pushing her toward that? Exactly what she needed.

The sister and ex drama was exactly what I expected—in the worst way. Zero boundaries, constant interference, and just overall chaos. I couldn’t stand either of them, but it made watching Zelda finally stand up for herself that much better.

While this isn’t the end of their story, I was really happy with where this book stopped. I’m not desperate for the next installment, but I’ll absolutely pick it up when I’m ready for more.

You’ll Love This Book If You Enjoy:

  • Why choose romance (or the possibility of it)
  • High-spice contemporary romance
  • Strong character growth arcs
  • Confident, evolving FMCs
  • Messy family and ex drama
  • Workplace/author industry romance
  • Relationship dynamics that grow over time

A spicy, character-driven sequel that builds on everything from Book 1 and delivers growth, drama, and heat.

Book Review: Fatkini by Monica Ross (The Fatkini Chronicles Book 1)

 Author: Monica Ross

Genre: Contemporary Romance / Plus Size Romance

Tropes: Body Positivity, Plus Size FMC, Toxic Ex, Healing Journey, MFM Romance, Why Choose Vibes, Self-Discovery, Workplace Romance

Spice Level: 🌶🌶🌶🌶

Format: eBook

Series: The Fatkini Chronicles

Zelda is done being hidden away and torn down by her boyfriend of two years. The final straw? Him mocking the bikini she bought—calling it a “fatkini” and comparing her to a beached whale. According to him, someone her size shouldn’t wear things like that.

    Yeah… absolutely not.

When Zelda finally walks away, it opens the door for something much better—especially when Aithan and Drew step in and make it their mission to show her just how gorgeous she really is.

This plus size romance had been sitting on my TBR for a while, and it delivered exactly what I was hoping for. A toxic relationship gets left in the dust, and the FMC steps into something healthier, more supportive, and honestly? Way hotter.

Her ex is the kind of character you love to hate—the slow-burn toxic type who chips away at confidence over time until you start believing the lies. That kind of emotional damage is hard to walk away from, and even harder not to go back to. Watching Zelda break free from that mindset and choose herself was incredibly satisfying.

The journey of self-discovery is a huge highlight here. From how she handles the breakup to exploring her confidence, her body, and what she actually wants out of life and relationships—it all feels empowering without losing the emotional weight behind it.

I also loved the dynamics between Zelda, her author friend, and her ex’s boss. The relationships build in a way that feels natural while still bringing plenty of tension and chemistry. This is definitely an open-door, spicy contemporary romance, with MFM dynamics that hint at possibly expanding further as the series continues.

One detail I didn’t expect to love as much as I did was the lifestyle and food aspect. Zelda’s commitment to her health and diet added another layer to her character, and it even inspired me to look into some of the recipes mentioned for my own health issues that I am also supposed to be on an AIP diet for.

Overall, this is an empowering, spicy plus size romance that balances emotional growth with steamy relationships and leaves you wanting more. And that ending? Total cliffhanger. I immediately needed book two.

Book Review: The Vixen and the Vet by Katy Regnery

Genre: Contemporary Romance • Military Romance • Fairy Tale Retelling

Tropes: Beauty and the Beast Retelling • Wounded Hero • Small Town • Grumpy/Sunshine • Journalist x Veteran • Forced Proximity • Emotional Healing

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Open door, explicit scenes)

Format: Contemporary Standalone Romance

Series: Standalone

Savannah returns to her hometown after falling for an unreliable informant. Fired from her reporting job and left wondering what to do to get her life back on track. When an old friend from school calls her about the possibility of getting on at a gossip rag in Arizona. But, she has to write a fluff piece about something heartwarming to present her skills and she has until the 4
th of July. The seemingly perfect story falls in her lap when she learns of the wounded war hero that has reclused himself away in his family home and is largely shunned by the town. But, an account of his story quickly changes into something more.

This book is listed as a modern Beauty and the Beast retelling, which is my favorite fairy tale and always will be. This is a wounded by an explosion vet with a lot of PTSD and a beautiful journalist. There is a bit of lying by omission, attempted rape, and a bit of abuse in this book, so if you have triggers this is your warning.

I really enjoyed this book and the very explicit scenes within. He does change for her, but not because it was something she needed. It was because it was what he wanted after getting re-introduced to life outside of his home, even in a small way. This couple wraps up perfectly at the end of this book and I would absolutely read more by this author in the future.

Book Review: Sparked by Lili Valente (The Virgin Playbook Book 4)

 Genre: Contemporary Romance

Tropes: Best Friends to Lovers, Second Chance Romance, Virgin Pact, Mutual Pining, Reunion Romance, Open Door

Spice Level: 🌶🌶🌶

Format: eBook

Series: The Virgin Playbook Book 4)

Jesse has had a crush on her best friend Sam for years, but when he leaves the day after graduation she never expected him to actually hold up his side of the bargain they made as teenagers. If they are both still virgins at 24 they will take the others. When he shows up for the first time at her 24th birthday party she barely recognizes him. But when she does? The sparks are still there. But is he still the same man she cared so much about or has he changed irrevocably? Hell…is she even his type?

I downloaded this book after having read the prequal. I haven’t read anything else within this series, so I may be missing quite a bit and just not know it. But, since I don’t I don’t feel like I was walking in blind to this story. It works well as a stand-alone and I didn’t really see any background characters in relationships or anything that would spoil reading more in the series.

I have mentioned it before, but for those that are new here I really like the best friends to loves trope. Although I feel like this book also covers the second chance romance aspect considering he did disappear for years without a word only to pop back up again. So I am going to consider it second chance as well.

I don’t love that he lied by omission for so long into the story, but I am glad that it worked out in the end. This is an open door romance, just in case you have any problems with that. That being said, there is much more plot to the book than spice. I loved all of it and will definitely be reading more in the future by this author.

This book is available on Kindle Unlimited or buy it on Amazon for $5.99 by clickinghere.

You’ll Love This Book If You Enjoy:

Book Review: The Best Friends (to Lovers ) Bargain by Lili Valente (The Virgin Playbook Prequal)

 Genre: Contemporary Romance

Spice Level: None

Format: eBook (Short Novella – 54 pages)

Sam and I have been best friends forever…but recently things are a little different. Every touch. Every comment. There is something more there. And I don’t think it’s one sided. So I have arranged for a picnic and I am going to tell him how I feel. Tell him I want to be more. What’s the worst that can happen?

This is a free book that I got at one point in time or another. I have a lot of Lili Valente books in my account, but haven’t read a ton of them. I have enjoyed the ones I have read, though. This book is more of a long prologue for Sparked. It is 54 pages and most of the book is what happens in that above paragraph. I really say much more than that about the story without giving everything away.

I will say that I enjoyed that little snippet enough that I immediately downloaded Sparked and read it. Jesse was a bit awkward, but it was adorable. Meanwhile Sam is the reason girls end up crushing on their friends sometimes in the first place.

Book Review: Zaan by Kat Mizera (Sidewinders Book 1)

Genre: Contemporary Romance / Sports Romance

Tropes: Second Chance Romance, Hockey Romance, Rockstar FMC, Celebrity Romance, Childhood Sweethearts, Forced Separation, Team Series

Spice Level: 🌶🌶🌶 – High spice (including a sex club scene)

Format: eBook

Series: Sidewinders Book 1

Zaan has only ever loved two things: hockey and Lexi. When Lexi’s singing career takes off, they make the painful decision to part ways in order to chase their individual dreams. But when her band implodes and she refuses to return, Zaan is the first place she runs. The question isn’t whether they still love each other—it’s whether the same obstacles that tore them apart before will do it again.

This is a sweet yet emotional second-chance hockey romance with a celebrity twist. Both characters have carried their love for years, but real-life pressures—fame, ambition, distance—haven’t magically disappeared. Watching them decide whether to adapt together or finally let go gives this story real emotional weight.

Lexi goes through a lot, especially from her former bandmates, but she’s surrounded by strong support once she allows herself to lean on it. The book does a great job of weaving their shared history into the present-day narrative, giving depth to their reunion and reminding readers why they belonged together in the first place.

While there’s a solid amount of spice—including one scene set in a sex club—the plot remains front and center. The romance, character growth, and team dynamics carry the story just as much as the steam.

The book ends with a bit of a teaser for future installments—not for Zaan and Lexi (their story is largely wrapped up), but for other teammates who seem primed for their own romances.

Book Review: My Darling Jane by Isla Madden-Mills (The Darlings Book 1)

 Genre: Contemporary Romance / Rom-Com

Tropes: Frenemies to Lovers, Sports Romance, Quarterback MMC, Matchmaker FMC, Single Mom Romance, Celebrity Romance, He Falls First, Slow Burn, Banter-Filled Romance

Spice Level: 🌶🌶 – Moderate spice with strong romantic tension

Format: Audiobook

Series: The Darlings Book 1

Jane has the perfect business idea: matchmaking. Never mind that her own love life is practically nonexistent. Dressed in her Cupid costume, she heads to a local bar to drum up potential male clients. Unfortunately, she runs into Jasper. The same Jasper who has driven her crazy every time they’ve met. But if he’s willing to let her set him up on dates—with someone who isn’t her—what’s the harm?

I listened to the audiobook (included with Kindle Unlimited), and I loved every second of this frienemies-to-lovers romance. He’s a quarterback with a playboy reputation; she’s an up-and-coming matchmaker with abandonment issues. (To be fair, he has his own baggage too.) Their chemistry is immediate, and the banter is top-tier.

Jake (yes, I adored him) is blunt, sarcastic, and occasionally insufferable—in the most entertaining way possible. His brutally honest dating questionnaire responses had me laughing, especially when he turned everything into something explicitly inappropriate. Watching him play along with Jane’s matchmaking plan—even when he already knew exactly who he wanted—was peak rom-com energy.

This is a lighthearted contemporary romance that wraps up beautifully with a satisfying, feel-good ending. It’s funny, flirty, and emotionally grounded without being overly angsty. I will absolutely be reading on in this series because I am attached to these characters and will be needing more. Full disclaimer it is a single mother celebrity read. I know single parent reads aren't everyone's cup of tea, so just wanted to put it out there.

Book Review: Butcher and Blackbird by Brynne Weaver (The Ruinous Love Trilogy Book 1)

Genre: Dark Romance / Romantic Suspense

Tropes: Serial Killer FMC, Vigilante Justice, Morally Gray Characters, Enemies to Lovers, Dark Games, He Fell First, Touch Her and Die, Found Partnership, Cat-and-Mouse

Spice Level: 🌶🌶🌶 – Slow burn with long, explicit scenes

Format:  Audiobook

Series: The Ruinous Love Trilogy Book 1

Sloane has needed an outlet for her darkness and the best way to expel that darkness is ending other serial killers. She is the Orb Weaver and if the FBI were smart enough to uncover her clues they would find all of her victim's victims. Her latest goal ended…badly and now she is trapped in a cage while his body slowly decomposes mockingly on the other side of the bars. Until an Irish pretty boy waltzes in and suggests a game. Once a year the two have to meet up for a game. Whoever discovers who the target is and offs them first wins a prize of their choice for the year. One game turns into multiple and a friendship is born. But will the ultimate prize be won?

This is a BookTok made me buy it book. I have been DEEP in my dark romance era and have no regrets. I have been seeing things about Cookies and Cream ice cream getting ruined by a book for so long and didn’t know. Trust and believe that I know now. No, it will NOT stop me from eating it. As a matter of fact, I have cookies and cream ice cream sandwiches in my freezer right now. And no. They don’t expire April 11th or 13th. I checked. Twice.

Rowan is probably my favorite character in this book. Or Lark. Hard choice. I am going to go with Rowan though. He is this amazing mix of golden retriever and dark broody touch her and die. Basically the perfect man. And that accent. Yes, I listened to the audiobook. Yes, I loved every second of it. And yes, I did immediately purchase book 2s audiobook as soon as I finished book 1.

The spice doesn’t spice for most of the book but when it does it is a solid 20 minutes for 1 spice scene. Have I mentioned how much I loved this book and these scenes? They are depraved, graphic, and every kind of wonderful. And the tattoo??? Swoon. Basically everything about Rowan is a swoon though. Like he can cook. Amazingly well. This is absolutely a he fell first book and there isn’t a thing I would change.

That being said, check your triggers. This book has a lot. Accidental cannibalism. Not so accidental cannibalism. Cookies and Cream Ice Cream. Murder-like a lot of it. Graphic scenes both sexual and gore-ridden, sometimes in the same room. Abuse of minors. Torture. Stalking. I think that’s it. But, probably not. There is a list of triggers at the beginning of the book.

Book Review: Brittle Hearts by Blake Black (Memento Vivere Duet Book 1)

Genre: Contemporary Romance / Dark Romance

Tropes: Bully Romance, Workplace Romance, Internship Romance, Reverse Harem (Slow Build), Bi Rep FMC, Plus-Size FMC, Virgin Heroine, Protective MMCs, Found Family, Cliffhanger

Spice Level: 🌶🌶🌶 – Explicit scenes (MM & FM), building toward more

Format: eBook

Series: Memento Vivere Book 1

Carolina’s life hasn’t been her own since her parents died in a car crash when she was 15. She and her younger sister were forced to move in with their abusive, alcoholic uncle—who demands rent and spending money to fund his habits. If the money isn’t delivered, Carolina pays the price. She shields her sister from the worst of it, counting down the days until her sister turns eighteen and they can finally escape.

Two more years of hell. Then freedom.

Until then, Carolina works two jobs while attending college full-time. When she loses one of those jobs, things look hopeless—until her professor offers her an internship at the NYC Crime Analysis Unit. Her dream opportunity. The only problem? It comes with her high school bully.

This was another Kindle Unlimited impulse grab—and I devoured it in 24 hours.

⚠️ Content Warnings:

  • Physical and emotional abuse (by guardians)
  • Workplace hostility
  • Bullying

Carolina is a short, very curvy FMC (often referred to in the book as fat), bilingual, and deeply insecure due to years of abuse and mistreatment. She’s a virgin who has never had a boyfriend, despite being asked out—because her self-esteem is so low she assumes any interest must be pity.

The story rotates POV between Carolina, Xander, Clay, and Josh. I’ll admit I had a personal bias against the name Josh (life experience 😅), but this fictional Josh? Total sweetheart. Supportive from day one. Fawns over her. Absolute green flag energy.

Then there’s Clay—whose sharp mouth matches her attitude perfectly—and Xander, who radiates dominant “Daddy” energy. The dynamics are layered, and I strongly suspect this series is heading toward MMFM. For now, it features MM and FM dynamics separately, with explicit scenes in both. And yes—I loved both.

The book ends on a cliffhanger that immediately makes you want book two. Between the romantic tension and the unresolved mystery surrounding her parents’ case, I’ll absolutely be continuing this series.

Book Review: Dawn by Cliff W Pettibone (The Brotherhood of Time Book 1)

Author: Cliff W. Pettibone

Genre: Historical Fantasy

Tropes: Historical Romance, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, M/M Romance, Time Travel

Spice Level: 🌶 Low Spice (one explicit scene)

Format: Paperback

Series: The Brotherhood of Time — Book 1

Rorthan has had a hard life from the very beginning. His mother died in childbirth, and his father—who has always blamed him for it—never even gave him a first name. As the King’s general, his father’s position comes with certain privileges, including elite tutoring, but warmth and affection are not among them.

Everything changes when Rorthan cuts through the palace gardens one day and meets Prince Tomren. What begins as a chance encounter quickly turns into an unexpected adventure that forces Rorthan to confront secrets about his past—and his future.

I received a physical copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Full disclosure: this is an M/M (male/male) romance. If that isn’t something you enjoy, you can either skip the single explicit scene or pass on the book entirely. Personally, I have absolutely no issues with it.

This story blends historical fantasy with light sci-fi elements and a unique take on time travel. Much of the story takes place in the ancient past, and I really enjoyed how the time travel mechanics were handled, as well as the gradual unfolding of secrets along the way.

While I hated what happened to Rorthan’s mentor, I was ultimately satisfied with how things played out—even though the book ends on a cliffhanger that leaves the boys’ futures uncertain. The characters are teenagers, giving the story a slightly YA feel, but the presence of a sex scene means I’d recommend some discretion if considering it for younger readers.

Overall, this was an engaging start to the series, and I’d absolutely be interested in reading more from this author.

⭐ You’ll like this book if you like:

  • Historical fantasy with time travel twists
  • M/M romance that’s character-driven rather than spice-heavy
  • Stories about identity, hidden pasts, and destiny
  • Fantasy that blends ancient settings with sci-fi concepts
  • Slow reveals, secrets, and cliffhanger endings
  • Royalty, palace intrigue, and unlikely friendships

Book Review: Always You by B Lustig (Always & Forever Book 1)

Charlotte is the sweet nerdy good-girl who stays home and takes care of her mother who has cancer. Hunter hates going home to his abusive, alcoholic mother. He doesn't deserve to keep Charlotte, but can't imagine life without her. So they're friends, but he manages to fuck even that up.

I love the friends to lovers trope and this one is a second chance at that. This book starts in the past before moving to the present then future. It goes into detail about their entire past and I loved it.

Hunter is so sweet even though he is portrayed as a bad-boy player. I mean he kind of is, but he's adorable. Although an idiot. Everything between them could have been resolved if he'd handled things better.

Trigger warnings: child death mentioned in backstory - does not go into detail. Cancer. Parental death.

This book took me forever to get through. I enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, but the first like 300 pages is all build-up and friendship. Nothing is even remotely spicy. There are some sex scenes in this big book, but nothing explicit. Normally, I enjoy a big book and 500+ pages isn't even the most I have read this year, but it was so back-story heavy that it felt longer. That being said, once the book finally caught up to the present it was nice knowing all the minutia of their history.

This book is available on Kindle Unlimited or buy it on Amazon for $3.99 by clicking here.
