Book Review: Mal-adaptive by Mike Burton

Mal-adaptive by [Mike Burton]     Mal is a normal enough girl. Works in a coffee shop with her best friend, Vin, has an apartment with her friend, Aalya, and has fibromyalgia. Nothing major happens in her life until two gorgeous men ask about her in one day at work. Turns out one is a demon, Corson, and the other is an angel, Ephra. They have orders to protect her and learn. Can this pair break from the molds they have always been in and what is so special about this little female anyways?

The demons are trying to force God's hand and begin Armageddon. In order to do so they must find the weapon. They know it is a person and that this person is somewhere on Earth, but not who they are or what kind of weapon they are. Can one person really be the catalyst to determine which side will win in the upcoming battle?

I loved this book, although the details about God at the end are weird. I suppose it is not so far fetched, but it isn't something you generally think about. In a way Supernatural (the tv show) did it, so maybe that is where the author got the idea from. Anyway, I loved Mal and the entire little group if I am honest. I don't have any real complaints about this book and I hope that you give the book a chance. I was suggested this book by the author a year ago and just now got around to reading it. I am sure you will love this book just as much as I did.

Book Review: BloodStorm by Amber Kallyn

Bloodstorm (Heart of a Vampire, Book 1) by [Amber Kallyn]     Niki's sire Thomas murdered her family and left her for dead. Only she changed into a vampire like him and has spent the last 200 years hunting him down. Now, she has found him in a small town. The only problem is this town is on the cusp of war between the local vampire clan and shifter pack with shifters being killed by vampires mysteriously. Holding it all together is a Keeper who didn't want the job in the first place. Can Niki fight her growing feelings for the Keeper while avenging her family or has she finally found a reason to leave the past behind her?

This book was different. I don't know how else to describe it. We have a Keeper who is also a shaman who tried to leave his familial obligations and who seems to have a thing against both shifters and vampires. We have a vampire who hates that she is a vampire and who is being haunted by the ghosts of her family that were murdered by her sire. Also, apparently if a vampire feeds from a human and that human dies they become a vampire. No blood exchange required? Like I said, different. But, what I don't get is not everyone who dies as a result becomes a vampire, such as Niki's family. It is all odd and confusing.

Other than those points the story wasn't bad. I like the vampire king. He seems like a nice guy. I don't have a whole lot of other positives to say on the book. If you would like to give this book a chance it is available on Amazon for free by clicking here.

Book Review: Wicked Appetite by Janet Evanovich (Lizzy and Diesel Book 1)

Wicked Appetite (Lizzy & Diesel Book 1) by [Janet Evanovich]     Lizzy has always made amazing cupcakes, but it seems her cupcakes aren't the only special thing about her. She also has the ability to sense the relics associated with the gems for the seven deadly sins. Because of this Lizzy finds herself paired with Diesel as they race against time and Gerewulf (Diesel's cousin) in order to get the gem for the good guys. Unfortunately, these artifacts come with some nasty habits. Can Lizzy control the impulses from the artifacts while trying to find the missing pieces?

I feel like the author spent a large amount of time during this book trying not to curse, only failing a couple of times in regards to a temperamental broom. I don't mind cursing, but the avoidance of it seemed almost forced at times. The storyline itself I loved. The search for artifacts that make you take on certain aspects of gluttony. I can't speak much for the writing on this book as I listened to the audiobook so some nuances that I have seen other reviews stating that they hated I did not notice. I will say that Carl the monkey was annoying to say the least, but I like the cat. Cat7143 belonged to her Aunt Ophelia and I hope that they find out the poor guy's actual name. He needs one.

I have never read any of Janet Evanovich's books before, but I do want to finish this series at some point in time or another. If you would also like to take a chance on this amusing book (and my favorite character, Glo) it is available on Amazon for $8.99 by clicking hereThis book is available on Kindle Unlimited.

Book Review: Bren's Blessing by Pearl Tate

Bren's Blessing - A Sci-Fi Alien Romance: The Quasar Lineage Book 1 by [Pearl Tate]       Hannah has been sent to orbit Mars in order to eventually begin a settlement. After a year in space everything seems to be going well. That is until a large humanoid species of alien board her vessel, taking her with them. She is scientifically intrigued by these giant males, but the Captain, Bren, has enamored her in more than just this. While initially wanting a way home with the development of the mating bond she is there to stay. It seems more than just the species difference may keep the pair apart however, as Bren is promised to another female on his home planet and she is calling him home.

I got this book on impulse because I love a good alien-human romance. Don't ask me why as I haven't figured that out yet, but I do. I was not disappointed in this one. I will say that the fact that the hair on this alien race is able to fall out and be controlled by the being is insanely weird to me. It isn't my favorite alien-human romance (currently Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon), but it is a decent read. It is a little fast paced, and honestly has a rushed feel about it.

Normally we are used to male dominated societies and males having multiple partners, if there are multiple partners. In this book the society that Bren comes from is in a female dominated society with each female having multiple husbands. Not my thing, either way. I am all about monogamy, but this book didn't really focus too much on the multiple partners. It even seems like they are working to get rid of the multiple partners. No complaints there from me!

Book Review: Junction 2020: The Portal by Carol Riggs

Junction 2020: Book One: The Portal by [Carol Riggs]     Randall, Lauren, Tony, and Mari have gone to a New Year's Eve party at the popular Stefani's house. However, while playing a game to find ping pong balls the group of five finds themselves in another dimension that seems born of nightmares and things adored. There are vampire spiders and executioners who kill you if you break the ten pm curfew as well as music to match your mood. Not only do they need to find a way home, they need to do it before the shifters find them and do who knows what.

If you were transported to a world that was literally made of your nightmares would you be able to face your greatest fears and save your companions in order to find a way back home? This is what Mari must face when confronted with this new reality. Personally, giving up the ability to dream doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but I don't see anything good coming from the shifter's in our world.

All in all, the book is an interesting YA read. There are character's who are more than they appear at first glace and others who may not be so bad after all. As this is book one in the series (of five books) I hope there are other adventures starring the other group member's nightmares in the future. Also, I hope that I am right in believing I have found Sanjen's uncle and in his identity. I can't promise I will be reading the others as my TBR list is already miles long, but it is a good read.

Book Review: The Swift by Ricky Dragoni

The Swift by [Ricky Dragoni]    Something bazaar has happened. One day everything was normal and the next the power was out and the military had taken a certain portion of everyone. Those that remain are not sure what is going on, but with the arrival of the swift they have bigger problems. Forced to hide in the dark with seemingly no food every day has become a fight for survival. Can they survive the fast menace who hunts them or will they starve to death first in their search for their families?

Coach Mike was separated from his wife and boys by the military and soon finds his previous player, Levi, on his quest for them. Now, he has a new reason to keep himself together as well as find a food source. The swift are edible, but they are so fast and hard to take down. Life has become the hunter and the hunted. The question is...which will come out on top?

I loved this book from the start, but certain things didn't make sense. I didn't question the food spoiling that the author expressed that he felt I would question. Instead I questioned why they would not eat the field corn that they were having to travel through. I know that field corn is primarily used for animals and ethanol, but as long as you get them before they "dent" field corn is edible. I have ate field corn many a time, and if I was starving I don't think I would have any compulsions against the hard dented corn either. It bothered me quite a bit at the time, but now that I know how the book ends it doesn't quite as much.

As always I will not give anything away, but this is one post-apocalyptic horror novel I suggest for anyone. I received this book as a free code from the author in exchange for a honest review. I have nothing bad to say about the book and can honestly say that I did not expect the ending. I was right in where I thought the swift had come from, however, which pleases me.

Book Review: Cruxim by Karin Cox (Dark Guardians Book 1)

Cruxim: You Are Never Alone (Dark Guardians Paranormal Fantasy Series Book 1) by [Karin L Cox]     Ame's purpose in life, as a Cruxim, is to dispatch vampires and send them to their eternal damnation. Life was lonely, but with the Sphinx Sabine it was better. That is until 40 years ago when he was captured by humans while dispatching a nest of vampires. Since then Beltran, the leader of a nest, has been goading him nightly. When he escapes Beltran quickly finds him, but it seems there are worse fates. Such as the freak show owner. Has Ame escaped one hell alone only to be forever trapped in another with Sabine?

Ame was always alone before Jocelyn and then, after she was changed into a vampire by Beltran, Sabine. When he was trapped in that tower he was once again alone and felt it in every fiber of his being. Outside of the vampires come to taunt him, that is. Once he is out the women in his life make a reappearance. While he loves them both there are worse things in store than choosing between females.

Generally I am not a big fan of multiple females with one male, but this book wasn't like that. He loves both, but Sabine is his while Jocelyn once could have been had ha accepted her in that way before she was turned. The book is good, with a lot of ups and downs. The ending leaves a lot of questions about how the women fared as well as who this new person is. That being said, the main plot points in this book were resolved so it is not like they left off in the middle of a book or anything. Thankfully. All in all this was a book that I enjoyed and I hope that you enjoy it as well if this is one that you end up reading.
