Sophia travels to Loch Arach in search of a dragon scale, which she believes will further her alchemist pursuits to make the world a better place. When she arrives she enters into a deal with the lord of the castle that in exchange for giving her dragon scales she will try her best to fix his friend. This friend seems like he is dead in every respect other than he is breathing and is still warm to the touch after having dealt with a sorcerer who wanted to use Cathal's shifting abilities for his own uses. When she agrees she is taken on an adventure that she never could have imagined where she falls for the laird himself. Just maybe she is what he was needing as well.Highlander books are always my favorite historical fiction books. Castles, big men, Scotland, and this one even has shifters. I hadn't read one quite like this before and I can't say that I was disappointed. Sophia was quirky, but able to view things differently than most everyone around her, which in the end was a huge help. Cathal is hard to understand at first in the book, but as it progresses he is just wanting to do what is best for his clan while he is in charge. The sorcerer, demons, and world she was taken to was unexpected and I am still not entirely sure how she was able to edit the world herself.
This is a slow build-up kind of romance with only one sex scene in the entire book. The main focus of this book seems to be on Sophia, even though it jumps back and forth from the perspectives of both characters. All in all it is a sweet romance that is mostly just historical fiction. If you like dragons, alchemists, sorcerers, and curses you should give this book a try.
