After Sargent Eli was shot and killed in 1864 in battle he learns he has been recruited by an immortal being named Adrestia to help dispense justice amongst the living. To complete his training he must spend the next five years as a Texas Ranger, under Captain Bill McDonald. He will face some of the worst humanity has to offer and maybe catch a glimpse of his family from time to time.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This is a western period piece, but since it isn't a historical romance I had high hopes for it. Afterall, who doesn't love a cowboy. The book was an avenging force that was still wrapped in sweet.
I don't mean that the man was sweet. Eli held no qualms against punishing the wicked for their crimes, once the crimes were confirmed. But, he did it justly. I will warn you there is a fair bit of Christianity in this book. He also cared deeply for his family throughout the story, even though he was dead he made sure he was able to check in on them occasionally.
We get to see how certain people tried to gain as much as an upper hand over others as possible through deceit in the Wild West and how these things were addressed. I don't want to go into too much more detail and give away the entire book. It was sweet and if it didn't have so many religious undertones I'd likely read more on it.
