Book Review: Dragon Shadow by Alicia Wolfe (Reclaiming the Fire Book 1)

Since her fire was stolen Jade has had one mission in life: get it back or die trying. While she waits to find any information on the warlock that stole her flame she has built a network intent on stealing things back from those who have taken them and are abusing this power. She feels making the world a better place justifies it and if she gets paid, well, everyone has to earn a living. While retrieving an item she can't resist the allure of a glowing antler which gets her captured by a Fae knight. Now, she has to contend with demons, gargoyles, and a stolen sister.

This book was one of my impulse purchases and I loved every second of it. All things paranormal wrapped in an amazing cover. We've witches, shifters, Fae, gargoyles, vampires, and demons all within this exciting series starter. I will absolutely be adding book two to my list.

This series definitely has all the vibes and set up for a slow-burn romance and I am here for it. We get to know the characters and a bit of their backstory in this book while solving who stole Jade's sister and who is attempting to kill the Fae Queen. All in all a very exciting and promising read. Did I mention they ride brooms in this book? That happens so infrequently in the witchy books...

This book is from the point of view of Jade so we learn things at the same rate she does. It is nice and allows the reader a bit of guessing room as things progress. The story is fast-paced and easy to read and stay interested with since there is something happening basically at all times.

Book Review: Jersey Shore Piney by Tony DiGerolamo (The Pineys Book 5)

The Galloway cousins have been invited to an all expenses paid weekend along Jersey Shore, during the off season, of course for capturing Hemmingway's mother before she could do damage. At the word free Hemmingway is all in, intent on reliving all the best parts of his childhood in this very town. Yet the homeless population of the area are surprisingly absent and the town mayor has appointed Hemmingway, of all people, to lead the parade. What could go wrong?

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I have read the first 5 in this series, yet am still entertained by the antics of the Galloways. I don't want to give it away, but the creature featured in this book isn't our normal "deer". These hunters may be out-matched with something of this size.

All of our favorite cousins have returned in this book and things are slowly starting to get better between them. Hemmingway gets to relive his best (and worst) childhood memories, Milton runs into an ex, Lewis is using his past-telling abilities better, while Shelly is still in her relationship. Both Lewis and Shelly are leery of their free vacation, but Hemmingway won't hear anything of it.

Like I mentioned, this is book 5 in the series and it cannot be read as a stand-alone. You would be missing out on some serious back-story starting from this book. Still, all of the Piney books are exciting, fun, and funny. This book is no exception. We continue to character build and I look forward to more adventures with these cousins in the future.

Book Review: Arkon by Ava Benton (Condemned Book 1)

Demons aren't real and I have definitely never seen one. Never hit one with my car. Extensive therapy and a relocation far from home has told me this....except he's back. He's in my house this time and he is very real. And very sexy. His human glamour does nothing for me...but the real him? I want him even though I know I shouldn't. He isn't interested in me, though. Just in the blade I have somehow managed to bind to myself that I found in my antiques shop. What is the worst that can happen knowing I am the only thing standing between a 7 ft demon and his revenge?

This book is another of my impulse purchases and I am not in the least bit sorry about it. I love paranormal romances and this is no exception. We jump back and forth between Arkon and Jasmine's perspectives in this book. The inner turmoil and their pasts unfolding slowly the more we get to know who they are now.

I enjoyed this book cover to cover and will likely end up reading the next in the series at some point. I have a feeling we will be getting more of Arkon's brothers further in the series and maybe more on a certain sexy witch.
This is definitely a forced proximity romance. Arkon has to stay with Jasmine long enough to find a way to un-bind the knife that will allow him to get back to Hell. A friend of Arkon's is looking into unbinding options, but so far all she has is killing the human. Not the first choice. Needless to say the book is exciting with constant threats from other paranormals being drawn to the blades power and the building tension.

Book Review: Rescue Me by Lauren Connolly (Forget the Past Book 1)

Paige has agreed to move home with her long-time boyfriend, buy a house together, and leave her job as an editor in New York. But, when she is fired instead of being allowed to work remotely she decides to surprise her fiancĂ©e by coming home a week early. When she arrives at the front door of their new home to be greeted by another woman...wearing her robe. Mortified, Paige goes home to her parents house and the next day finds an adorable Pit badly hurt. After calling animal services and waiting for them to arrive she decides she will be this sweet girl's new owner. But, the grump who is taking care of her at the shelter doesn't think she is up to the task, still, Paige offers to pay him to train her new girl.

I am firmly under the impression that buying and reading books are two completely different hobbies. Still, this is a book that I got during one of my random buying escapades. When I got this book it had a very different cover, sporting one of the main characters, Dash.

I can very firmly say I loved this book. Dash is a bit of a grump, but only on the outside. The more we get to know him the sweet and lovey he becomes. Even if he does try to ruin everything by being stupid. I won't spoil that though. Paige is wonderful and sees the best in people. Probably why she stuck with her looser ex for so long. Between Dash's love of cars, which he shares with Paige's mother, Paige's love of reading, and the pup who lives up to the true pit nature they are nothing short of perfect. Yes, I do mean lovable, slightly dense, and a cuddle bug for the pit nature. I have a brindle pitty and she's the sweetest, and stupidest, girl you will ever meet.

While the characters themselves are amazing there is plenty to keep you entertained throughout the book as well, from Paige's ex trying to make a return to Dash's past creeping up on him. Each instance presents a potential hurdle in Dash and Paige's blooming relationship.

Book Review: Wolfsong by Ignatz Dovidans (Moonrise Book 1)

Jumping perspectives between three people who in this book have seemingly no connection we meet a master anti-assassin, a farm boy, and the daughter of a sword-smith. The farm boy was by far my favorite character. He longs for adventure and to get away from his foster parents, when he discovers a new book to add to his collection it soon becomes a prize. Although the secret of his parentage may lead to his biggest adventure.

I found this book by chance while scrolling on TikTok and decided to try it out. I enjoy a good fantasy adventure and although this book starts out a little slow by the time you reach the cliffhanger for each of the characters you are invested. It is one I would have no problem reading more on in the future.

The world building and characters are enjoyable. I will say that it jumps perspectives from one chapter to the next with no cross-over between the three, which leaves a little to be desired, but you can see that the author is eventually building towards something with these characters. Exactly what that is we are not yet sure. All in all it is a sold start to a series.

Book Review: Peppermint and Pentacles by Melanie Karsak (Red Cape Society Book 3)

Clemeny is no rookie to the supernatural events that unfold in the streets of London. However, when she is assigned to a special case involving missing children she never expected just what other paranormals truly lurked in the shadows. She has until Christmas to solve these disappearances or the children may be lost forever.

I got this book as part of a boxed set including books 1-3. Links for my other reviews are listed below, if you would like to check them out. While this is book 3 in a series and you would be missing some of the characters back-stories, you can read this book as a stand-alone. It is Christmas themed and I really don't want to give away who the culprit is.

We get more of Clemeny and her boss in this book, although any budding romances are still very mild. I will keep my fingers crossed that book 4, which is on my TBR, will have a bit more of that aspect. That being said, the action and all the paranormal adventure is still very present in the series and we do not feel like we are missing out on anything just because the main character is not in a relationship. Also, we still get the fun of the setting. I will say that this is likely my favorite book in the series so far, just because of who is behind the kidnappings.

Book Review: Tasting Red by Holly Roberds (The Lost Girls Book 1)

Having one of the most magically inclined grandparents does not mean that you will have a strong affinity for magic. Red knows this first hand, but she decided to make the most of it by living among the humans. At least there she wasn't looked down on for her lack of abilities. She could attend college and was working at a bar she enjoyed. But when Red comes home to visit her grandmother for the holidays she finds a wolf shifter instead. Thinking he is one of her grandmother's guards she accepts his "protection" without knowing his end goal.

I found this book on BookTok and immediately downloaded it. I will start by saying book two for this series is absolutely on my TBR and my best friend received so many screenshots of highlights from this book. It is fun, witty, and most importantly sexy.

Scarlet, who goes by Red, is the granddaughter of everyone's favorite grandmother. She is the maker of Magical Morsels, a treat that lets humans have a taste of power for a short time. She is one of the only witches powerful enough for this kind of magic, but it also puts a continuous target on her back from competitors wanting her recipe. Red isn't sure what she is, but for some reason at certain times she craves sex like no other. Doing her best to control these urges goes well until she finds a werewolf shifter at her grandmother's house. He takes on the role of her protector, but can she protect herself from this sexy man whose sole purpose is to get close to her?

I loved every bit of this book. From the spicy scenes to the continuous attitude. All of the girls in this book are my favorite. I can't choose just one. I will absolutely be devouring every single one of these books then hunting for more by this author once I am done. The characters are wonderful. The setting is exciting, and who doesn't love a sexy twist on our favored fairy tales? Yes, please.

Book Review: Alphas and Airships by Melanie Karsak (Red Cape Society Book 2)

After the retirement of her partner from the force Clemeny is on her own for the most part. Lionhart has taken over the role as alpha and the streets of London are largely quiet. However, mischief brews in the skies above as pirates threaten, capture, and control. The new captain of the Red Capes has decided to join her on this and while Clemeny has a strange attraction to him she is sure that it is as one sided since her new scar does nothing for her looks.

I got this book as part of a set in an impulse purchase and loved it. I will start by saying this is book 2 in a series and while it can technically be read as a stand-alone I suggest reading book one first. Without reading it you won't know the intimate details of Lionhart and his game companion, Clemeny and her grandmother, or her scar. It gives brief descriptions of these things as an overview, but first hand knowledge is always better. Plus book one is great.

We are still in a steampunk Victorian London in this book as we were in the previous. So the setting is, of course, still amazing. We still have Clemeny as our main character and while she has grown a bit as a character and her biases have changed a bit. Always a good thing. It seems that the series, while still focusing on the paranormal enforcement has begun bridging into a romance category as well. I am not complaining on that since I love a good smut book as much as the next girl.

While the threat in this book is again werewolves this time they are Viking werewolves. We also are introduced to some other paranormals and Clemeny's heritage is brought under closer scrutiny.

Book Review: The Center Duet by Liz Hambleton (The Discovery Center Book 1)

Alaina's ten year mark with her husband is about to be reached. At the end of the term they must either both choose to remain in the relationship and begin the next term of their lives with the prospect of children or search out a new partner in The Discovery Center. When she is informed her husband decided against extending their relationship she was shocked and hurt, but with the attentions of her inductor at the center life begins to take an exciting turn. However, he isn't the only one interested as Killian has arrived with motives of his own. The choices she makes could have consequences she had never before even considered on her life and others.

I found a snippet of this book somewhere or other talking about how you got your partner for ten years and then you changed or remained. I was intrigued and as soon as I started this book I loved it. It is post-apocalyptic in a way. The world is controlled in every aspect, down to the weather, of anyone within the dome. Their entire worlds exist within the dome and everything is regimented. The world within the bounds works tirelessly to hide that their society is on a downward spiral with less and less women being born every year. Meanwhile, the world outside the dome is wild, untamed, and flourishing. Just so long as they are never found by the authorities.

The book is well-written and exciting. I loved her slowly carving out a place in the world while the story built in another way as well. Every choice was her own as we discovered her future and her past. Killian was immediately my favored choice, although there is always something about the morally grey choices in men. This is absolutely a book that I have added the next book in the series to my TBR, but who knows when I will be reading it considering BookTok is terrible for me ever completing said list.
